Description

Archive footage from 1953 shows the state funeral of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, who died on March 5 at the age of 74.

His body was put on display at Moscow’s House of the Unions, where Soviet military leaders, members of the government and thousands of ordinary citizens gathered to pay tribute to the 'Father of Nations', as Stalin was called during his lifetime.

Having led his country since 1924 and through World War II, his health reportedly deteriorated in mid-1940s due to heavy smoking, and he had severe heart attack in October 1945.

His coffin was delivered to Red Square on March 9 for the funeral itself. At noon Moscow time, a moment of silence was observed nationwide as the body was interred in Lenin’s Mausoleum. Work stopped and sirens and horns sounded across the Soviet Union.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
