Description

Police arrived at an 'undeclared' protest for Palestine in Paris on Sunday, anticipating clashes as demonstrations against Israel's actions in the Middle East erupted across the country.

Footage shows police rushing to the scene, encircling the demonstrators, and pushing them back as they try to break through the security barrier. Protesters also were seen marching while waving Palestinian and Lebanese flags, chanting slogans that label Israel as 'terrorist' and 'fascist.'

It comes after French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly expressed support for Israel, in which he stated that France has always stood by their administration.

Amid ongoing protests in Europe, Macron initially called for a suspension of arms shipments to Israel; however, his office later reversed his position, affirming that military support would resume.

According to an arms export report presented to parliament by the French Defense Ministry in July 2023, France sells an average of 20 million euros ($21.9 million) worth of military equipment to Israel each year.

Fighting escalated after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that the Palestinian death toll hit 42,600 with more than 99,795 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.

Earlier, the IDF also announced the start of a campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah positions dubbed 'Operation Northern Arrows'. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that these attacks have resulted in 2,448 casualties and left 11,500 injured.

Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging intensified cross-border shelling with the Israeli forces since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
