Description

Footage captured in the village of Marjayoun on Sunday shows plumes of smoke rising over the hills after Israel launched pre-emptive airstrikes on Hezbollah 'terror targets' in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported that "a large-scale air aggression launched by Israeli occupation aircraft targeted the outskirts of the town of Ain Qana, Kfar Fila, Louaizeh, Bsalia, Kfar Melki, Zawtar, the Bir Kalb area in Jabal al-Rayhan, and the outskirts of the towns of Sajd, Kfar Fila, and Sarba."

On the same day, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said Israel had identified Hezbollah units 'preparing to fire missiles and rockets' toward Israeli territory.

"We can see that Hezbollah is preparing to launch an extensive attack on Israel while endangering the Lebanese civilians. We warn the civilians located in the areas where Hezbollah is operating to move out of harm's way immediately for their own safety," he added.

In turn, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the IDF had been ordered to move 'proactively to remove the threat'.

"I ask you, citizens of Israel, to obey the directives of the Home Front Command. We are determined to do everything to protect our country, return the residents of the north safely to their homes and continue to uphold a simple rule: whoever hurts us, we hurt them," he added.

It comes after Hezbollah vowed a reprisal for the Israeli airstrike which killed its senior commander Fuad Shukr in a southern Beirut suburb on July 31.

A day later, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said a response to Shukr's death was 'inevitable' and would 'definitely happen'.

The IDF claimed responsibility for the attack in Beirut, saying Israeli forces had 'eliminated' Fuad Shukr in a 'precise airstrike'.

Israel described Shukr as "Hezbollah's most senior military commander and the head of its strategic unit and Secretary-General of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah's right hand," accusing him of being responsible for the rocket attack on Majdal Shams on July 27.

Hezbollah, along with Lebanese and Palestinian factions, have been exchanging fire with the Israeli army along the border since October 8, a day after the deadly Hamas offensive and subsequent IDF military campaign in Gaza.
