Description

Thousands of Elvis Presley fans from across the globe gathered in Graceland on Thursday for the annual candlelight vigil celebrating the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

"Elvis is special to me because of... the music... but also look at the crowd. look at the fans, you know its heartfelt," said one fan.

"We wonder sometimes you know if Elvis is going to go away? I will tell you this, Elvis is never going to go away, the business of Elvis, Graceland. I can't predict the future but love for Elvis will never go away," he continued.

Footage show many people making speeches, creating pictures and murals, and paying tribute to their hero.

"I would like to pay tribute and say thank you for all that he did," added another fan.

The annual Elvis Week culminates with the Candlelight Vigil at Graceland, the musician's former home. The vigil extends into the early hours of August 16, the anniversary of his death.

The event first started in 1978 when fans assembled outside Graceland on the first anniversary of his passing. Approximately 9,500 people paid their respects at his grave.

Elvis Presley had huge hits with tracks like 'Jailhouse Rock', 'Heartbreak Hotel' and 'Viva Las Vegas' - and starred in many movies. He was initially viewed by the authorities as a threat to 'white American youth' due to his popularisation of the 'African American sound'.

The singer, still known throughout the world as one of the most important musicians of the 20th century, died on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. His official cause of death was a heart attack, with prescription drug use and unhealthy lifestyle believed to have contributed.
