Description

Millions of devout Shia Muslim pilgrims flocked to Iraq's holy city of Karbala on Sunday to mark Arbaeen and pledge their allegiance to Imam Hussein.

Footage shows crowds clad in black while holding banners and placards in honour of Hussein at a shrine dedicated to the Imam.

This anniversary is observed by Shia Muslims in Iraq and other countries to mark the 40th day after the killing of Imam Hussein in a battle at Karbala, which fell on the 10th of Muharram, AH 61(680 AD).

The Arbaeen pilgrimage, a monumental event, is the largest religious public gathering worldwide, drawing millions of Shia Muslims.

The pilgrimage includes complimentary food and drink offerings at various points along the route to Karbala as a manifestation of religious solidarity and generosity.

Millions walk from Najaf, where the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib is located, to the city of Karbala, where the shrine of Imam Hussein is situated. This journey is known as 'Tariq Al-Mashaya', meaning the path of the walkers.
