Iran's reformist presidential candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won Iran’s presidential election with 16.3m ballots, defeating his conservative opponent Saeed Jalili, who received 13.5m ballots in second round of presidential elctions, Mohsen Eslami, the spokesperson for the Iranian Election Commission announced on Saturday.

"From the total votes of branches inside and outside the country, the votes obtained are: 30,530,157 votes, respectively, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian: 16,384,403 votes; and Mr. Saeed Jalili: 13,538,179 votes. Based on this, Masoud Pezeshkian is introduced as the elected candidate for the 14th term of the Iranian presidential election," Eslami stated.

During his campaign, the second reformist president in almost two decades pledged to secure sanctions relief, relax social restrictions and negotiate with the west.

Eslami noted that the voter turnout reached 49.8 percent, marking an increase of nearly 10 percent from the first round, as per official statistics.

The runoff was triggered after no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes on June 28. In the first round Pezeshkian led with 10.4 million - or around 42 percent - with Jalili close behind on 9.4 million - 39 percent - of the 24.5 million votes cast.

The election was held a year ahead of schedule after former president Ebrahim Raisi, foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six others were killed in a helicopter crash on May 19 in the country's northwestern mountains.
