Description

Tunisian security forces reportedly raided the Deanship of Lawyers' headquarter and apprehended activist lawyer Sania Dahmani, who is known for her outspoken criticism of President Kais Saied, alongside two journalists, Tunis Lawyers' Deanship reported.

Video footage captured during the incursion displayed masked individuals in civilian attire forcibly removing individuals from the building, with a woman's voice in the background repeatedly decrying the "storming of the lawyer's house ( Deanship of Lawyers's headquarters)."

In response to these actions, Hatem Meziou, the head of the Deanship of Lawyers, stated in a radio interview that 'significant measures' would be taken. "The breaking into the lawyer's house in Tunis by security personnel wearing civilian clothes to arrest the lawyer Sonia Dahmani will not remain unanswered, as the Bar Association council is set to meet on Sunday at midday to adopt very important and significant decisions."

Saniya Al-Dahmani's legal representative, Dalila Mosaddeq, shared on Facebook that the police had forcefully entered the lawyer's residence and taken Saniya Al-Dahmani into custody without divulging her location.

As of the time of this report, official authorities have refrained from providing any comments on the incident.

Dahmani's detention occurred after her remarks during a television appearance this week, where she commented on Saied's speech alleging a conspiracy to encourage undocumented migrants from Sub-Saharan countries to remain in Tunisia, characterising the living conditions negatively in the country.

Initially summoned before a judge on Wednesday for alleged dissemination of false information and disruption of public order, Dahmani requested a deferral of the investigation.

Seeking refuge at the deanship's headquarters on Friday, the lawyer cited previous criticisms she had made of President Kais Saied as the reason for her sheltering there.
