Iranian state television broadcast footage of explosions in the skies over the capital, Tehran, claiming they were in response to a recent Israeli attacks on Iran.

"The head of the public relations department of the air defence of Tehran province announced earlier that the loud sounds heard around Tehran were the response of the air defence of the province to the Zionist regime's attempt to attack three airports outside the city of Tehran. The dimensions of this issue are under investigation," the TV anchor said during a live broadcast.

The date of the footage of the explosions in the skies of Tehran can not be independently verified.

The strikes began in the early hours of Saturday morning local time. A number of explosions were reported in Tehran by local media.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said it was "in response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the state of Israel." He announced later that the IDF's offensive against Iran had ended.

Iran's air defence headquarters confirmed that Israel attacked military sites in Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam provinces, noting that the attack resulted in 'limited damage' to some sites.

Iranian officials announced the cancellation of flights on all routes until further notice. The airspace was reopened at 9:00 a.m. local time (5:30 GMT).

Iran launched a wave of missile strikes on Israel on October 1, which it said was in response to Israel's killing of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah during operations in Lebanon, and others. Following the attacks Netanyahu said that Tehran had made a 'big mistake' and warned of 'consequences'.

Israel is currently fighting Hezbollah with airstrikes and ground troops in southern Lebanon and conducting an ongoing offensive against Hamas in Gaza, following the October 7, 2023, attacks. Over 2,500 have been reported killed in Lebanon and over 42,000 in Gaza at time of publication.
