Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized Beijing’s commitment to the peaceful use of outer space, asserting that China is not looking to engage in a competitive arms race, speaking during a daily press briefing on Monday.
"China stays committed to the peaceful use of outer space, and opposes arms race in outer space or weaponizing outer space. China has no intention to engage in a race with other countries in the space and doesn’t seek to gain an edge in the space," he said.
Highlighting recent developments, Jian condemned the establishment of the US 'Meadowlands' system, a sophisticated satellite jamming technology designed to target Chinese and Russian satellites.
"China once again urges the US to stop spreading irresponsible remarks, stop expanding military build-up in outer space, and make due contribution to upholding the lasting peace and security in outer space," he continued.
Regarding the Israeli attack on Iran amid the ongoing war in the Middle East, Lin Jian said Beijing opposes infringement of the sovereignty and security of other countries and the frequent use of force.
"The tensions in the Middle East are running high. Relevant parties need to refrain from further increasing the overall security risks in the region. The recent incidents once again highlight the urgency to end the fighting."
This remark came following the Israel attack on military centres on Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes 'severely harmed' Iran and 'achieved all goals,' while Iran's supreme leader said these attacks should not be 'exaggerated' or 'downplayed.'
Commenting on Indonesia’s desire to join the BRICS block, Jian exprssed China's support for the potential step saying: "Indonesia is an important major developing country and emerging economy and has actively involved itself in 'BRICS Plus' cooperation in recent years. BRICS is an open and inclusive mechanism and we welcome more like-minded partners, including Indonesia, to join the BRICS family."
Jian did not comment on the Japanese election describing it as 'Japan’s internal affair,' however, he remarked that his country "hopes that Japan will work with China in the same direction, act on the principles and consensus in the four political documents between China and Japan."
During the daily briefing, the spokesperson denounced the reports saying Beijing is conducting espionage activities on Western governments, urging the US to "stop various types of irresponsible moves to blame the victim, stop cyberattacks globally, and stop using cybersecurity issues to vilify China," while the US has never stopped its espionage activities against China, according to him.
