In an interview on Monday, Nabila Bhar and her daughter Sara recounted the events of July 3, 2023, when Israeli forces reportedly killed Nabila’s 24-year-old son, Mohammed Bhar, during a military raid on their home in the Shujaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City. Mohammed, who had Down syndrome, was allegedly mauled by a military dog during the incursion.

Nabila Bhar described her profound loss, saying, "We lost everything beautiful. Mohammed was the pleasure of this house; he was my soul. When I heard that he was dead, I felt as if my soul had left me."

Sara Bhar recounted the attack, "Two quadcopters landed in our kitchen and on the stairs. Then, two dogs with cameras on their chests entered. The first dog attacked my sister-in-law, and the second mauled Mohammed three times. We were helpless, shouting for the soldiers to stop and telling them Mohammed is disabled and does not understand."

Nabila Bhar said they were prevented from providing Mohammed with water and described her distress when she heard him moaning before he fell silent. She added, "I peeked through the door and told Sara, ‘I think Mohammed was martyred.’”

The raid was part of a broader Israeli ground operation in Shujaiya, which lasted two weeks and resulted in numerous casualties and significant destruction. The Bhar family had remained in their home until Israeli forces entered on July 3.

According to the Israeli military, Mohammed was attacked by a military dog during the operation and was given initial medical treatment. The army claimed that the soldiers had to leave Mohammed to assist other wounded soldiers, one of whom later died. The military expressed regret for any harm caused to civilians but did not provide details about Mohammed’s condition when the soldiers left.

The Bhar family, however, disputes the military's account, asserting that Mohammed did not receive adequate medical care and that the army requested them to leave him behind in the room where he was injured.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 40,786 people had been killed and more than 94,224 injured at the time of publication.
