Description

Sicily's Mount Etna was seen spitting lava and plumes of smoke into the night sky on Saturday.

Footage features lava being released as well as heavy smoke rising into the black sky as the Sicilian volcano erupts.

According to media reports, the eruption sent lava flows down the 3,320-metre-high cone, marking a significant event for one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

Catania Airport was reportedly closed on Friday due to the ash hazards in the atmosphere, but flights resumed again around 3 pm local time.

Italy's Civil Protection Department raised the alert to yellow and warned that the eruption was not a one-off occurrence.

Europe's tallest volcano also ranks as one the most active in Europe, as it remained in a state of eruption for over ten years, since 2013. It has also seen eruptions in February, May, August, November, and December 2023.
