Description

The second day of the fourth round of the Libyan Joint Military Commission (JMC) talks started at the UN Palace of Nations in Geneva, on Tuesday, to discuss a comprehensive reconciliation process.

Stephanie Williams, the acting special representative of the secretary-general (ASRSG) and head of the UN Stabilisation Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), could be seen arriving, followed by members of both delegations.

The meeting on Monday involved political and economic discussions, in a bid to end the civil war that has been plaguing the nation for years.

In her opening speech, Williams expressed hope of reaching a solution that would guarantee peace and "a complete and sustainable ceasefire."

"Libyan people across the nation are looking forward to seeing the outcomes of this round and what can be done during these few days to reduce their suffering and expel the ghost of war from the entire Libyan soil, while not allowing any foreign interference that might prolong the conflict," Williams said on Monday.

The round of talks in Geneva is marked by in-person meetings between the delegations of the two parties to the conflict in Libya, made up of five high-ranking officers from each side, compromising the military leadership of the Tripoli and Benghazi/Tobruk-based powers.

Libyan National Army (LNA) forces, led by Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar are based in Benghazi, with the parliament in Tobruk, and the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, is based in Tripoli. Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Williams is due to hold a press conference regarding the talks on October 21 at 09:15 local time (07:15 GMT).
