Description

Madrid residents celebrated the new year with the traditional San Silvestre Vallecana 10 km (6.2 miles) annual race on Thursday.

Under the motto 'Goodbye 2020,' 500 of runners took on the latest round of the San Silvestre Vallecana, which traditionally sees several thousands but it was limited due to COVID-19 this year.

"It's a very particular edition, it' incredible, so emotive, because of the people who couldn't make it, for the friends who couldn't be here, in their name, we played out our skin, an incredible edition, without the logic and normal frame, but... a party," said runner Santiago Romero after the race which took place on a 2.5 km (1.5 miles) circuit with participants running four laps.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw Densa from Ethiopia took the female gold whilst Daniel Simiu Ebenyo from Kenya won the male category.

Despite being limited to 250 male and 250 female elite runners this year, several thousands registered online to take part on a virtual edition of the annual race which has been held every year in the Madrid borough of Vallecas on December 31st since 1964.
