Description

Exclusive drone footage released on Saturday shows the ancient ruins of Palmyra, two days after the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by the Russian Air Force, liberated the historic city from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The footage shows the ruins of the iconic Roman Theatre, the Great Colonnade, the Tetrapylon of Palmyra, as well as a former market place.

Since the city was fully cleared of IS militants, government troops have reportedly seized strategic heights south of the city, before carrying on with their offensive eastwards.

Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fell to IS in 2015. The Syrian government first liberated the city from IS in March 2016, but lost it again several months later.
