Description

Mullet lovers of all ages flocked to the Indiana State Fair for the second-round showdown of the 2024 USA National Mullet Championship in Indianapolis on Sunday.

Footage shows contest participants gathered on stage to showcase their amazing haircuts while waiting for the winner to be announced, cheered by an enthusiastic crowd.

One contestant shared a humourous tale of the birth of his mullet, in which the hair is cut short at the front and sides and left long at the back.

"When I could go to the barber shop, I found out I only had enough money to cut the front hair. So that is what happened, and then it suddenly turned into this thanks to my sculptress," he explained.

Lucky contestant Edhem Teminovic was crowned the winner of the Indiana State Fair Mullet Championship with his own delightfully permed interpretation of the iconic haircut. Joseph Casteel scooped the second spot for his classic mullet paired with a matching crop top, short shorts and WWE wrestling belt, while Miggle Dela Roca rounded out the three winners with his innovative bleached blonde mullet and silk kimono combo.

Teminovic was awarded the $500 prize and proceeds to the heady heights of the third round, where he will compete with the top 25 owners of monumental mullets from across the US in each category. On August 28, the proud owners of the three most majestic mullets in each category will be announced.

While considered as American as apple pie today, historians have traced the humble mullet back to antiquity with evidence it was sported by 1st century Britons and records of a 'Hunnic' hipster look popular among 6th Century Byzantine youth. Researchers point to the functional value of the 'do', with trim hair in the front staying out of the wearer's eyes, while the longer hair at the back provides warmth and protection to prevent the sunburn that leads to a red neck.
