Gusti Ayu Soli, a 106-year-old dancer from Bali, has gone viral thanks to her passion and commitment to her performances, as seen in footage from Monday.
"I am over a hundred years old. I have danced in Sanur, Ubud, and Jakarta," she explained. "Besides dancing, I cut grass in the rice fields every day. I take any job, the important thing is that I'm happy."
She is seen putting on her make-up and costume with the help of an assistant, before taking to the stage for the traditional Legong Bapang dance. She also shared her nutrition plan, which gives her the stamina and energy to perform.
"When I eat, I only eat cassava (a type of tuber), sweet potatoes, and corn; that's my food from childhood. I rarely ate rice," she added.
"I hope 'Grandma Soli' will always be in good health and of course, live a long life," shared Fanny, her dancing assistant. "Thanks to 'Grandma Soli' we are more enthusiastic about learning to dance.. it can make the younger generation even more enthusiastic."
Soli reportedly performed for the first President Sukarno in 1945. She gained national attention while dancing at the 2023 Bali Arts Festival.
Legong is a traditional Balinese dance known for its intricate choreography, with precise movements of the hands, fingers, legs and facial expressions, giving it a storytelling quality.
