Description

Footage captured on Thursday shows scenes of desolation in the city of Geneina in the West Darfur region, after reports of clashes between warring tribes last month.

Violence erupted on April 24 and lasted five days after an armed militia group reportedly raided the city, unleashing chaos and leaving at least 96 people dead.

The militants looted and burned humanitarian shelters, marketplaces, government buildings and the headquarters of the Sudanese Red Crescent, according to local media reports.

A major hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders was also reportedly pillaged amid the violence.

Armed men, believed to be from the Masalit ethnic group reportedly seized over 5,000 weapons from the Geneina police chief’s armoury.

Despite reports of skirmishes between Arab militias and ethnic Darfuri tribes, former governor of the West Darfur state, Mohamed Abdallah al-Douma, has since denied the violence was tribal, claiming locals took up arms to fight off a militia group after the Sudanese army failed to protect them.

West Darfur remains unstable after more than a decade of civil war between Arabs and Darfuri tribes. The ongoing conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army has left a power vacuum in the region, leading to fears of a surge in ethnic violence.
