Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said US President Joe Biden had promised to impose sanctions against Nord Stream 2 in case of "energy problems for Ukraine,” calling the step a ‘great victory,’ during comments from Washington DC on Wednesday following a meeting between the two leaders.

"So far, we are at a stage where President Biden personally guarantees that if Russia or other parties to Nord Stream 2 [if launched] violate anything, providing an unsafe situation, or create energy problems for Ukraine, then the United States guarantees the imposition of sanctions against Nord Stream 2. This is a great victory," Zelensky said.

Moreover, the Ukrainian leader stated, "the United States will think over his initiative" to involve US representatives at the presidential level in the format of a peace settlement of the conflict in Donbass.

Volodymyr Zelensky also noted that the meeting with Biden lasted for about two hours, which, he said, indicates, "that the parties are really interested in dialogue" and its results.

"I don’t know if there was chemistry between us, it’s hard to say. […] I believe that the meeting was in a regular, productive, not always in a lovely atmosphere, but was a normal, human conversation," Zelensky added.
