Description

King Charles and Queen Camilla were welcomed at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday, after arriving in Australia for their first royal tour of the country since ascending to the throne.

Footage outside the Parliament House shows the King and Queen being greeted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other officials. A military parade and crowds were also seen.

King Charles will address a reception for community and political leaders, while the pair will visit the Australian War Memorial and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Memorial.

On Monday, the King was also heckled by Aboriginal Senator Lidia Thorpe on his visit to the Australian Parliament. "This is not your land. You are not my king!" she told him as she was led away by security. Thorpe is the first Indigenous senator for Victoria and a vocal campaigner for Aboriginal rights.

This trip is the King’s biggest visit since starting his cancer treatment in February. Charles himself has made 16 visits to Australia but this trip is the first by a reigning monarch since 2011. Following the visit, Charles and Camilla will travel to Samoa for the 56 Commonwealth nations biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
