Description

Smoke and flames were seen rising across southern Lebanon on Monday, as Israel reported that its jets had conducted large-scale strikes on 'Hezbollah targets' in the country.

Footage shows huge plumes of smoke billowing from Nabatiyeh district with fires burning in the mountainous areas following raids. Ambulances can also be seen driving around the area.

The Lebanon Health Ministry stated that 50 people had been killed and 300 injured at time of publication.

Earlier, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed that the country had started 'attacking terrorist targets in Lebanon'.

"The attacks will continue in the near future," he said. "To all the residents of the villages in Lebanon, in the near future we will continue attacking terrorist targets in Lebanon. We call on anyone who is near properties or inside houses, where Hezbollah hides weapons, we call on you to stay away from them immediately. "

Local media reported that areas including Bekaa Valley in the east and towns of southern Lebanon including Tayyibah, Suluqi, Markbah, Hula, Ayta, Marun al-Ras, Abbasiyah, Mais al-Jabal, Rihan Heights, Kafrerman, Burj Rahal, Aynatha, Bnei Hayan, Khiyyam and Kafrkalla had been hit.

Tensions heightened last week after at least 42 were killed and thousands injured when pagers and handheld radios exploded across Lebanon. Hezbollah, which confirmed its members were targeted, blamed Israel, while the IDF did not comment.

Subsequently, Israel conducted waves of strikes on southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah fired 150 rockets, drones and missiles across the border on Sunday, according to reports.

The sides have been engaged in cross-border fire for months, with hostilities escalating in October 2023 following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
