The European Parliament convened in Strasbourg on Wednesday for a contentious debate concerning the European Union's decision to impose sanctions on Iran in response to its recent attack on Israel.

Member of Parliament Clare Daly criticised the EU for what she perceives as double standards, highlighting the Union's failure to condemn and sanction Israel for its actions in what she described as the 'most proportionately destructive war in history.'

"Everybody outside this room knows the cause of the escalation is Israel. Everybody knows that Israel has been trying to broaden the conflict in the region to detract from their genocidal war on Gaza and everybody knows that the EU who for seven months of the most proportionately destructive war in history have failed to condemn and sanction Israel," she started. "The world is changing your settler colonial project has been exposed like never before and the world can see that the EU emperor has no clothes."

On the other side, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, downplayed the effectiveness of labeling the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, stating that it would have 'no practical effect.'

"The EU has listed the IRGC in its entirety on the Iran weapons of mass destruction sanction regime which already comprises and asset freeze and a prohibition to make funds and economic resources available," the EU leader explained.

Furthermore, MEP Mick Wallace urged the parliament to reflect on the root causes of the conflict, emphasising the importance of understanding the sequence of events that led to the current situation.

"You send jets to protect military bases in Israel but in six months, no Palestinian child enjoy your protection. What's better: the 15,000 lives of Palestinian children or a military base?... We cannot go on like this." he said.

For his part, Member of the European Parliament Mick Wallace criticised the EU's proposed sanctions on Iran, questioning the lack of similar measures against Israel for its actions in Gaza.

"You pretend the EU is civilised. In your suits, you condemn people to die with your voting cards, blatantly lying to excuse your actions. The banality of evil. This place is a stain on humanity. Mr Burrell, we respect your effort to bring some sanity to the place," he concluded.

Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel on Saturday night. The US, UK and Jordan all assisted in the shooting down the projectiles, with the IDF claiming '99 percent' had been intercepted.

The attack came as a response to the alleged Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 - which Israel has not accepted responsibility for. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to retaliate and said his country would take its own decisions, despite Western allies warning against it.
