Description

Thousands gathered in Tehran on Thursday to mourn Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a massive funeral procession led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Footage shows thousands of mourners carrying posters of Ismail Haniyeh and waving Palestinian flags. Chants calling for 'revenge' and banners honouring Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Islamic Republic of Iran are seen during the procession.

Haniyeh's body was flown to Qatar for burial following the service.

It comes after Hamas announced the death of its political leader, who was "assassinated along with his companion in an Israeli raid on their residence in Tehran," according to a statement from the group.

Ismail Haniyeh was a key figure in ongoing talks regarding a ceasefire in Gaza. He had been in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian

He joined Hamas on its inception in 1987 and was later elected as head of the Hamas's Reform and Change list that won the Palestinian legislative elections. He also served as Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority between 2006 and 2014.
