Taekwondo silver medalist Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi received a warm welcome upon his return from the Tokyo Olympics to Tunis, on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old athlete, who came in second in the 58kg category, was seen celebrating among dozens of his supporters.

"I have always been training for this day and I know who my opponent is in the draw. My ambition was to win the final. I am very happy because I beat the Korean competitor, because no one in the world could beat him, and I lost against the Italian in the last competition," he said.

Former world champion Seif El-Din Trabelsi, who is Jendoubi's coach said, "I was with Khalil in Tokyo, the plan and strategy that we used with Khalil was not a month or two ago, Khalil joined the senior national team in late 2018, his beginning was with me and the Russian coach in 2019, as well as with his father Hisham, who in turn was his coach since he was young, since 2019 we started preparations and training for the 2020 Olympic Games."

Jendoubi had defeated South Korean Jang Jun, the 2019 world champion, in the semi-final match of the Tokyo Olympics, with a score of 25-19, but the Tunisian champion was not able to grab the gold in the final, as he lost to Italian Vito Delacila with a score of 12-16.

This medal is the second for Tunisia in this year's Olympics, after Tunisian swimmer Ahmed El Hefnaoui won the gold in the 400 meters freestyle.
