Description

The aftermath of the destruction of Sheikh Hasina Wazed's Awami League party office could be seen in Dhaka on Wednesday, after the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister resigned from her post and fled to India, ending her 15-year tenure.

Footage shows the burnt-out party office building, with windows smashed and empty rooms strewn with debris and rubbish.

According to media reports, locals set fire to the Awami League's central office after hearing that Hasina had fled Bangladesh.

This follows an arson attack on the Jubo League, a youth wing of the Awami League, on Monday in Chuadanga which reportedly claimed four lives.

Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of parliament and the formation of a national government to facilitate fresh elections following Hasina's resignation on August 5.

It follows weeks of escalating violence across the country that reportedly resulted in over 200 deaths, amid protests over a quota system reserving 30 per cent of government jobs for families of veterans of Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.

Meanwhile, Hasina is now in India after she fled Bangladesh on Monday. After thousands of demonstrators stormed Hasina's official residence, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government would be formed.

The situation in Bangladesh reportedly remains tense amid a leadership vacuum, and clashes between political factions.

Hasina served as prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and then from January 2009 to August 2024.
