Description

Displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip decorated their tents to mark the advent of the Holy Month of Ramadan on Saturday amid the ongoing war in the enclave. According to astronomy predictions, the holy month will start on Monday, March 11.

Footage shows displaced Gazans decorating their tents and adorning the area with lanterns and other Ramadan-themed decorations, meanwhile, a group of religious vocalists reciting religious songs with locals gathering around. The video also shows children holding signs reading 'Amidst the destruction, the Palestinian doesn’t bow' and 'Ramadan Kareem'.

“This year’s Ramadan comes amid pain, suffering, and cruel conditions. We have no vision or hope, and the future is uncertain. We don’t know how to feed our children and how we can fast amid all this”, said Heba al-Akkad, a displaced woman.

Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 30,960 people had been killed and more than 72,524 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
