Vu Lan festival participants were lighting thousands of lanterns and sailing them in the Thu Bon river in the coastal city of Hoi An on Sunday to express gratitude to their parents and commemorate ancestors.

"My family often comes here to sail flower lanterns at the Vu Lan Festival. It is a very meaningful tradition for us," said one of the locals Nguyen Trung Hau. "Today when I came here, I was very surprised to see so many attendees, the scene was really magnificent."

She added that this festival is a "very special occasion for children to remember their parents and show gratitude for their kindness."

"The only thing I wish for today is for my parents to have a better health and life, and to stay longer with me," another attendee Vu Tien Dat shared.

Attendees traditionally light up lanterns expressing appreciation for their parents and pray for peace and happiness honouring the deceased ancestors.

Vu Lan Festival is annually celebrated on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month as a day when spirits can visit the live realm, in accordance with Buddhist tradition.
