Hundreds of fans gathered in Hong Kong on Wednesday to celebrate the return of their Olympic athletes, who brought home medals from the Paris 2024 Games.

Footage shows the athletes arriving, their open-top bus, and fans lining up to greet and congratulate them. Banners bearing the name of Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey could be seen, as supporters requested autographs and posed for photos with the athletes.

"I came to see the athletes and support them because I think their sportsmanship, hard work and perseverance are very good and worthy of admiration, so I came to support them. I feel very happy. I was very excited just now. I feel very fulfilled after meeting them," a fan said.

"Hong Kong cannot compete with the United States or China, countries with like 40 gold medals. I think it is nice enough to reach a 30-something place finish on the Olympic Medal Table," he added.

"Every one of you is a hero in the hearts of citizens. Please give the warmest applause to every member of the Hong Kong, China Delegation!" said John Lee, Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Olympians Edgar Cheung and Haughey were among the athletes who made history on the third day of the Paris Games, with Cheung securing a gold medal in the men’s foil event. Siobhan Haughey reportedly earned around $192,000 (€172,500) from the Hong Kong Sports Institute for winning an Olympic bronze medal in the women’s 200-metre freestyle.

Also on Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with the Olympic athletes who represented China at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.

The next Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles in 2028.
