Description

Montreal police officers were seen gathering on McGill University's campus on Thursday to disperse a group of pro-Palestinian student protesters occupying the university's James Administration Building.

Footage shows police officers at the demonstration site while some protesters can be seen waving Palestinian flags outside the building. Footage also shows smoke rising while some can be heard shouting.

According to the Montreal Police Department, 15 demonstrators have been arrested during the confrontation.

Police reportedly used tear gas on demonstrators. This comes after the university's president called for a police response amid rising tensions on campus.

In May, a wave of encampments and building occupations took over the US and then the world as students staged large-scale pro-Palestine protests on campus territories, demanding that educational institutions divest and cut ties with Israeli-affiliated businesses.

Fighting continues in Gaza for the eighth month after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 36,654 people had been killed and more than 83,309 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
