Description

Captivating views of terraced rice fields attract tourists and locals alike to visit northern Vietnam's Mu Cang Chai district in autumn.

Drone footage filmed on Monday shows the terraces stretching across the mountainous landscape, blooming in hues of green and yellow during harvest season. Tourists were seen taking pictures as locals in traditional dresses promenaded through the rice fields and workers equipped with baskets prepared to collect harvest.

"The fields are so beautiful, and when you come here, you must say: 'oh, wow, how beautiful it is'. Everyone says so," one of the tourists, Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, commented.

Another tourist, Patrick Fujieki, comparing the place to his homeland in the US, noted that the terraced fields are 'so special and unique' that nothing can 'beat' them.

"When I go back with all my friends and family members, I will definitely recommend coming to this province and other places throughout Vietnam," he added.

The terraced fields in steep terrain were reportedly built by the Hmong people many centuries ago. Their water management system was designed to utilise the natural streams' flow to feed the fields, guaranteeing steady growth even under challenging circumstances.

"We rely on only climatic conditions to get rainwater," local Nguyen Duc Huan explained. "Because people here don't have pumps and irrigation systems like down below, they have to build terraced fields to collect water. The rain flows down from the mountains. People keep a few centimetres of water in that field, but if there is too much, it flows down."

The harvest season in September and October, when the fields turn into a golden sea, and the planting season in May and June, which is renowned for its rich greenery, are believed to be the best times to see Mu Cang Chai's terraced rice fields.
