Description

Archive footage filmed on January 27, 1973, shows the landmark meeting and signing of the Paris Peace Accords to end the Vietnam War.

Representatives of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam (representing South Vietnamese communists), and the United States are shown.

Members of the delegations can be seen arriving at the venue for talks and later signing the accords in a meeting hall.

Under the Paris Agreement, remaining US forces were to be withdrawn from Vietnam, including air and naval attachments. It led to a short-lived cessation of hostilities, although the deal was frequently broken by forces from the north and south of the country, with open fighting by March 1973.

In 1975, a huge offensive by North Vietnamese forces conquered South Vietnam, reuniting the two as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on July 2, 1976. It marked the first time the country had been a single nation since 1954.

According to historical data, more than 3 million people, including over 58,000 from the US, were killed in the conflict. More than half of those who died were Vietnamese civilians.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
