Security was ramped up at India's Taj Mahal in Agra on Thursday as thousands of visitors flocked to the iconic mausoleum on the country's Independence Day.

Footage shows tourists walking around the site, taking photos and enjoying the view of the landmark, as well as police officers patrolling the area and checking attendees at the main entrance.

Indian authorities intensified security around the country ahead of Independence Day. In New Delhi security agencies also deployed advanced artificial intelligence-based security systems around the Red Fort, according to media reports.

Police officers and Border Security Forces were reportedly deployed across the country including Punjab State and Jammu and Kashmir.

Independence Day is celebrated annually through festivities across India on August 15.

The dissolution of the former British Raj saw the area divided into the broadly Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan in 1947, displacing around 15 million people, with up to 1 million believed to have been killed. Bangladesh later seceded from Pakistan in 1971.
