Head of Kherson City Military Administration Roman Mrochko claimed three people died and eight were injured amid reported shelling of the Kherson urban territorial community.

"As a result of Russian enemy shelling of the Kherson urban territorial community over the past day, three people, unfortunately, died, and another eight sustained injuries of various degrees of severity," Mrochko wrote in his Telegram channel on Sunday.

Footage filmed in Kherson on the same day shows buildings with broken windows and pieces of glass lying on the ground.

Mrochko added 'Kherson territorial community was shelled 28 times over the past day' with several explosions followed by fires emerging across the city.

"School, hospitals, boiler house, heating networks of the city, private and multi-storey residential buildings were damaged by the shelling," Kherson city head reported.

Russian officials have not claimed responsibility for the attack or responded to Ukraine's accusations at the time of publication, although has repeatedly denied targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure.

However, the Russian Defence Ministry released a daily report saying: "In Kherson direction, as a result of the actions by units of Russian troops and artillery, the enemy losses were up to 80 servicemen and three motor vehicles."

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kyiv had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
