Archive footage filmed in 1962 and 1967 features Malian President Modiba Keita's visit to Moscow, as well as Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie’s trip to an oil refinery in his country which was constructed with technical assistance from the USSR.

Keita can be seen arriving at Moscow's Vnukovo airport and driving in an open-top car through the Soviet capital, while being greeted by thousands of Muscovites in 1962.

Speaking at an event with his Malian counterpart, Premier of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev said that people from African countries 'still have a great struggle for their rights, for achieving their true independence.'

"This struggle will be persistent and intense because the old never gives way to the new," the Soviet leader added.

Meanwhile, Selassie is seen arriving at the oil refinery in Abbas in 1967. Construction began in 1964 and started operations the year of his visit, continuing until 1997.

Ethiopian and Soviet specialists can be seen working in laboratories and operating equipment outside. Footage also features the children of Soviet workers at a local nursery, with their Ethiopian teacher.
