Millions of Syrians were displaced with the start of the civil conflict on March 15, 2011. Twelve years on, displaced Syrians in Hama call the conflict a 'tragedy' as some live in poor conditions in a building, where they face difficulties maintaining a solid routine.

"We wish to return to our homes because we are going through very tough circumstances here. We suffer from bad weather conditions and high prices. We are the poor and working-class; most of the people here are displaced day labourers," said Saeed Haj Omar, one of the building’s residents.

The war not only shattered people’s economic and social lives but also ended professional aspirations. Fadi Moaeri was an athlete who had even won first place in the Arab Military Championship. However, Moaeri was severely wounded during the conflict and ended up with paraplegia, a condition which effectively put an end to his athletic aspirations.

"I underwent several surgeries in both my legs, and I am much better now. This is a difficult anniversary for all of us because we lost our homes and our country," he described.

One of the locals claimed that before the war 'everything was available and everyone was satisfied', and that life had become much harder since the beginning of the conflict.

"I hope Arab and foreign countries will help us end this crisis and reconstruct our country so that we can live like we used to before the war," stated Raghda Murjan, a woman displaced due to the conflict.

Nearly 400,000 are estimated to have been killed since the start of the conflict in 2011, according to UN figures. According to United Nations Refugee Agency, as many as 6.66 million were internally displaced persons in Syria in 2021.
