Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said outside the Tel Nof Airbase in Rehovot on Monday that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF)'s killing of Senior Commander Ibrahim Aqil sends 'a clear message to Hezbollah'.

"The IDF's strike on Hezbollah's chain of command is a clear message to the Hezbollah terrorist organisation," he said. "It is also a message to the entire Middle East and beyond it - we will know how to reach anyone who threatens the citizens of the State of Israel."

"It must be said, we have many more capabilities that we are yet to deploy, we are in a very high state of readiness both in offense and in defense. We are well prepared for the next stages and are planning them properly for the coming days," the chief of staff warned.

Halevi also claimed that Hezbollah's commanders were planning 'to conquer the Galilee' for years. He also accused the group of being responsible 'for the murder of many Israeli civilians.'

Aqil joined Hezbollah in the 1980s, and was most recently leader of the party's military council, as successor to the late Fouad Shukr. He was wanted in the US over the 1983 bombings of the country's embassy in Beirut.

On Friday, the IDF announced Aqil had been killed in a 'precise' airstrike on Beirut. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that at least 14 were killed and 66 injured in the attack. A funeral procession was held for Aqil on Sunday.

Tensions heightened last week after at least 42 were killed and thousands injured when pagers and handheld radios exploded across Lebanon. Hezbollah, which confirmed its members were targeted, blamed Israel, while the IDF did not comment.

On Sunday, Israel conducted waves of strikes on southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah fired 150 rockets, drones and missiles across the border.
