Description

A second night of violence took place at the pro-Palestine protest camp at UCLA in Los Angeles on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Footage shows police facing off against a large crowd of protesters in the early hours with a number of clashes between officers and activists.

According to reports, police officers began attempting to dismantle barricades around the camp, after telling the protesters to leave the area or be arrested.

It followed violent scenes in the earlier hours of Wednesday morning when students from rival groups were seen clashing at the camp before police moved in. Media reports claimed pro-Israel supporters armed with sticks and pepper spray attempted to dismantle the camp, after the university authorities declared it an 'illegal gathering'.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the violence 'absolutely abhorrent and inexcusable', while the office of California's governor criticised a 'limited and delayed' police response on Wednesday.

That same day, New York police cleared a sit-in protest in support of Palestine at a building at Columbia University and made hundreds of arrests.

Similar pro-Palestine protests, sparked by action at Columbia University, have seen camps formed on university campuses, with organisers calling on the faculties to cut ties with Israeli companies amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
