Description

Dozens of villages in northern India's state of Uttar Pradesh were hit by severe floods due to the overflow of the Rapti river, forcing locals to evacuate their homes.

Footage captured in Balrampur district on Saturday shows flooded houses as well as locals wading through the high waters and children playing in the streets submerged in water.

"I have received a call that a part of the house has collapsed. There is no electricity or water. If you look in front of the house, you can see it has completely turned into a pond. There is no place to sit in the house, we've let my father sit upstairs," a resident named Imran said.

Another local named Rauf shared his house is sinking while the food supplies vanished completely.

"The rice stored in the house has also been completely washed away and we have collected it in this way. We are cooking food in other people's houses," he said.

After the Rapti river recently crossed its danger level due to heavy rains the overflow of hill streams exacerbated the situation, causing widespread waterlogging.

Continuous rainfall also affected water levels in other rivers in the district, with significant rises in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers as well.
