Residents of Maarat al-Numan, located in the governorate of Idlib, gathered for Eid al-Adha prayers on Tuesday, for the first time since the city was retaken by the Syrian Army.
Footage shows dozens praying inside Aweys Qarni Mosque, as well as locals distributing food and toys to children.
“Happy Eid to all. The atmosphere is good, and more people are returning to their homes. It is good to spend Eid at home in our hometown,” said Um Mohamed, a local man.
In 2020, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) regained control over the strategic town of Maarat al-Numan during the last week of January.
Syrian citizens receive Eid al-Adha during a time of economic hardship in the aftermath of February’s deadly earthquake and over a decade of brutal civil war.
The Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) takes place on the third day of Hajj, the pilgrimage made to Mecca. It is the second most significant Muslim holiday in the Islamic calendar, following Eid al-Fitr, which marks the conclusion of Ramadan fasting.
