Description

Smoke was seen rising across Khiam, Kafr Hamam and Rashia al-Fakhar in the Marjayoun district near the Lebanese-Israeli border on Thursday, as Israeli airstrikes continued across the region.

It came as clashes continued between Hezbollah fighters and the Israeli army, which launched a 'limited' ground operation earlier this week.

Khiam, five kilometres east of the border, is separated from Kfarkela village by the 10-km-wide Khiam plain. In Kfarkela, also in the Marjayoun district, clashes were reported the two sides.

On Wednesday, the Israeli army announced that eight soldiers had been killed in fighting. Hezbollah said that it had targeted Israeli soldiers in several villages, including Yaroun, Odaisseh, Maroun al-Ras and Kfarkela, in statements released on Wednesday and Thursday.

Israel's latest wave of strikes on Hezbollah targets began on September 23, with more than 1,200 people killed and over 7,000 injured at time of publication, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Last Friday, an attack on Beirut's southern suburb killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and others. Iran launched a wave of missiles on Tuesday, which is said was in response to that assassination and others.

Tensions in southern Lebanon escalated in mid of September after mass explosions of pagers and handheld radios belonging to Hezbollah. The group has exchanged cross-border fire with Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
