Description

The aftermath of an airstrike at the Masnaa border crossing between Lebanon and Syria was seen on Friday, with a huge crater at the checkpoint and queues of cars unable to pass.

Footage shows some people making the journey on foot, carrying their belongings.

"Unfortunately, the Zionist aggression had warned of this road as being used for smuggling weapons or something else to Hezbollah," said council member Hussein Yassin. "The press came and filmed the trucks and found that nothing [of that kind] was in them. This crossing is just for food and used by people fleeing from Lebanon to Syria - look with your eyes - they are only people escaping from the horror of the disaster that occurred in Lebanon."

According to media reports, hundreds of thousands of people have used the crossing to flee Israeli airstrikes in the south of Lebanon.

"I consider the strike was primarily intended to disrupt the only humanitarian route between Lebanon and Syria rather than cut off supplies to Hezbollah,” added another councillor, Adnan Yassin.

Earlier, the IDF accused the Hezbollah group of using the crossing to transport military equipment into the country. In a statement, the Israeli army added that “last night (Thursday), an infrastructure was attacked at the Masnaa border crossing between Syria and Lebanon that was used to transport weapons to Hezbollah.”

"With precise intelligence guidance from the Military Intelligence Corps, Air Force fighter jets attacked a 3.5 km long underground tunnel crossing the Lebanese-Syrian border that was used by Hezbollah to transport and store a large amount of weapons underground," the statement added.

There are four more border crossings into Syria with in the Tartous governorate and the other three in the Homs governorate.

Israel began a 'limited and targeted' ground incursion into Lebanon on Tuesday, after over a week of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. More than 1,200 were reported killed and over 7,000 injured in those strikes at time of publication, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Last Friday, an Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburb killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and others. Iran launched a wave of missiles on Tuesday, which it said was in response to that assassination and others.

Tensions in southern Lebanon first escalated in mid-September after mass explosions of pagers and handheld radios belonging to Hezbollah. The group has exchanged cross-border fire with Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
