Thousands of Portugal and Turkey fans gathered in Dortmund on Saturday for their UEFA EURO 2024 clash at BVB Stadium.

Footage shows fans gathering in the city centre, having their faces painted in the colours of their national flags, before chanting, dancing and waving flags as they make their way toward the stadium.

Ahead of the match, Portugal fans were full of optimism. "I think Portugal are favourites and they must prove and send a message to other teams that we can win this European Championship," said one fan of Roberto Martinez's team.

"I think it's going to be the closest game in the group because Turkey played very well against Georgia and Portugal is the best team in this group, so, I think it will be a perfect match to evaluate what Roberto Martinez's players are doing," he added.

Among the fans of the teams were many people who moved from Turkey and Portugal to live in Germany. One young Turkish fan said he lives in 'Germany but my grandparents came from Turkey, so, today we are supporting Turkey.'

Not every fan was lucky enough to land a ticket to the match. "We still have a lot of fun and we'll just meet at the fan zone," said Melia, a Turkey fan.

After the first round of matches, Turkey and Portugal were leading Group F. Turkey defeated Georgia 3-1 while Portugal beat Czechia with a score of 2-1.

Turkey has a poor record against Portugal in official matches, having suffered six defeats, while Portugal has scored two or more goals against Turkey in four consecutive matches.
