Description

Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un held an emergency meeting of the Political Bureau of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) in Sinuiju, a city located near the DPRK-China border, as thousands of residents were displaced due to widespread flooding in the region.

The images published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday show Kim inspecting the flooded area in a rubber boat as well as holding the meeting on rehabilitation measures with WPK members in his armoured train.

According to state media, torrential rains poured down on Sinuiju and several adjacent areas near the Chinese border, submerging infrastructure and leaving 4,100 houses and almost 3,000 hectares of farmland in water. Approximately 5,000 residents also had to be evacuated from their homes.

Over the two-day meeting, Kim discussed various issues with members of the Political Bureau, including damage prevention, rehabilitation measures and rescue operations to be carried out urgently in the flood hit North Phyongan and Jagang provinces. The leader also called for the WPK, the military and the people to unite and overcome the calamity.

KCNA previously reported on Kim's visit to the flood-hit area, where he praised the military for saving 5,000 lives and criticising local officials for crisis planning on Sunday.
