Description

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the completion of the first line of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, speaking on Friday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

"I am happy to tell you that today, two and a half hours ago, the first stretch of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed. The works on the second stretch continue," he said.

He also stated that the idea that Russia is not concerned about the environment is “nonsense” and promised to cut emissions faster than Europe.

"In the coming 30 years, we aim to keep the volume of pure greenhouse gas emissions lower than in Europe. I am sure that this is an ambitious task, but it can be solved,” the president said.

He went on to ask the government to create a plan by the end of June “in order to provide foreign citizens with the opportunity for commercial vaccination” in Russia against COVID-19.

SPIEF is held for the 24th time this year. The annual forum brings together the heads of international organisations, well-known public figures, leading academics, experts, and the media.
