Thousands of comic book fans gathered for 'Comiket' on the 104th edition of the festival at the international exhibition centre in Tokyo on Monday, despite the high temperatures.

One vendor, Takashi, admitted it had been 'extremely hot' for such an indoor event - with temperatures hitting 30 degrees Celsius - but was grateful to those who had made the trip.

Footage also shows a huge number of fans arriving, comic vendors plying their trade, and crowds watching visual demonstrations, as well as 'cosplay' enthusiasts dressed as their favourite characters.

"I am [dressed as] 'Otaku' (a geek) - I do it because I enjoy interacting with other 'otaku' - geeks," shared Yuika, while another, Raira, said she loved dressing up "because I can be someone different from me".

The semiannual event was first held in 1975, showcasing self-published manga (Japanese comics and graphic novels). According to organisers, 130,000 attended on the first day of the two-day festival.
