Gymnast Kaylia Nemour described her joy in securing a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games during an interview in Paris on Thursday. Nemour, whose discipline is the uneven bars, said she was proud to bring Algeria and Africa their first-ever gymnastics gold medal.

"I am very proud to have been able to bring back this medal, the very first, for Algeria and for Africa. Frankly, it's close to my heart and I'm very honoured to represent this medal, the very first one," Nemour said.

While she lives in France and holds French citizenship, Nemour represents Algeria in international competitions through her Algerian father. She highlighted how the support from both French and Algerian fans played a crucial role in her victory, motivating her throughout the competition. "Everyone supported me and I think it still helped me and it motivated me and it supported me and it was great," she added.

17-year-old Nemour clinched the gold with a score of 15.700, narrowly defeating China’s Qiu Qiyuan, who scored 15.500. Her performance in the qualification rounds was equally impressive, where her routines earned her a top score.

Addressing her status as a role model for young girls, Nemour encouraged them to follow their dreams, emphasising the importance of self-belief. "Never give up, always push forward," she urged.

Looking ahead, Nemour plans to take some much-needed rest after an intense year of training and competition. She aims to return to training soon, with upcoming events like the World Cup, club competitions, and the World Championships on the agenda. Her long-term goal remains the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Nemour is also the 2023 World silver medallist on the uneven bars and the 2023 African all-around champion.
