Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced the start of the Christmas holidays on October 1 in 'tribute' and gratitude' to the nation on Tuesday.

"September… smells like Christmas, and that’s why this year, in tribute to you, in gratitude to you, I am going to decree the early start of Christmas on October 1. Christmas starts on the first of October for everyone. Christmas has arrived with peace, happiness, and security," he said.

Maduro has also announced earlier Christmas holidays in previous years. Last year he rescheduled the festivities for November 1, in 2021 it was from October 4, and from 2020 from October 15.

The president also paid tribute to the Venezuelan people who had supported his government and 'gave a beautiful demonstration of confidence' in the country, following recent elections in July.

His speech came after the Attorney General's Office issued an arrest warrant for opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, over claims of the 'usurpation' of public duties, falsification of documents and instigation of disobedience and system sabotage. Gonzalez's team recently published data claiming he had won by more than 30 percent of the vote.

The National Electoral Council declared Maduro had won a third term with 51 percent of the vote, which the Supreme Court later confirmed as 'unobjectionable'. Russia, China, and others congratulated Maduro, while the US said it had 'serious concerns'.

On Monday, the US announced that it had seized one of Maduro's aeroplanes in the Dominican Republic, flying it to Florida following what it called 'suspected violations' of export control and sanctions laws. The Venezuelan president condemned what he called an act of 'piracy'.

Maduro has been in power since 2013, while his United Socialist Party of Venezuela has governed the country since 2007.
