Life gradually returned to normal in the city of Qamishli in Hasakah province Thursday following the lifting of an embargo by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) imposed on Hasakah and Qamishli which was mediated by Russian forces.

“The tension lasted for about ten days, and we were afraid. Now a reconciliation agreement has been concluded under the auspices of Russia," Ahmed, a local, said.

Footage shows a local market and the streets coming back to life as owners reopened their stores.

“During the past few days, there have been security tensions between SDF and the Syrian forces. This negatively affected the delivery of services and the economic situation in Qamishli and Hasakah province in general. Of course, Russia played a guarantor role in this agreement, and thankfully now the market has started to return to what it was before,” said Abdul Wahab Khalil, a shop owner.

“The contradiction of these international conflicts by the actors intervening in the Syrian affair has had an impact on Russian efforts to reach a political solution for the region, especially since Russia is now mediating between Turkey and the Syrian government, in addition to the Russians trying as much as possible to bring the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) and Turkey closer together to maintain stability in the region. However, many regional actors seem dissatisfied with these efforts and try to destabilise and hinder them,” Farid Saadoun, a political analyst explained.

On 13 August Russian military officials held talks with the SDF and Syrian army representatives which led to the lifting of the embargo according to media reports.

The SDF had imposed a siege on Damascus-held areas in Hasakah and Qamishli for the past week in response to an offensive of Arab tribal forces against the Kurdish-led militant group in Deir ez-Zor province, allegedly cutting off drinking water and food supply.

Clashes erupted last Wednesday between Arab tribal forces and the SDF, with the latter claiming that the Syrian army attacked villages under its control east of the Euphrates River.

The Kurdish Self-Administration and its military wing, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), administer the areas it controls in northern and northeastern Syria through civil and military local councils.
