Description

Tens of thousands gathered in Mexico City’s Zocalo Square on Sunday night as outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) delivered a speech from the balcony of the National Palace during 'Cry of Dolores' celebrations on the eve of Mexico’s Independence Day.

Footage shows AMLO ringing a bell and waving a large Mexican flag as crowds cheered from below. Later, fireworks are seen exploding in the sky as the gathering celebrated 214 years of independence from Spanish rule.

"Let corruption die! Death to greed! Death to racism! Death to discrimination! Long live love! Long live Mexican workers,” the Mexican president is heard shouting from the balcony. “Long live Mexico!”

It comes as Mexico commemorates the 214th anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, an event in 1810, which saw Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla ringing a church bell as a call to arms triggering the Mexican War of Independence.

AMLO is currently serving the last month of his six-year term and will make way for fellow Morena party member Claudia Sheinbaum on October 1. The former mayor of Mexico City will become the country’s first female president after her landslide election victory in June.

Obrador (70) was inaugurated as Mexican President on December 1, after winning the general election in 2018. Article 83 of the Mexican Constitution restricts the country’s presidential term to a single six-year term, called a 'sexenio', and prohibits anyone who holds the position - even on a caretaker basis - from running for president or holding the office again.
