At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the departure of the US President Donald Trump who is due to leave the White House later today. President Rouhani also urged the US President-elect Joe Biden to return to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and lift crippling economic sanctions on Iran.

Referring to the JCPOA, President Rouhani stated: "Today the ball is in the court of the United States and Washington. If they return, they fulfil their obligations, we will fulfil our obligations. Trump died, his political life ended, and JCPOA survived. All his efforts were to destroy JCPOA and he was unsuccessful, he could not. The extremists of the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia were all looking for this. They were unsuccessful. JCPOA is alive today, JCPOA is more animated than yesterday."

Trump had pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and imposed crippling economic sanctions on Tehran.
