Description

Thousands of people in Kargil gathered on Thursday to participate in a condolence rally to pay their respects to Iran's late President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash alongside seven other Iranian leaders earlier in the week.

"We recognise the importance of unity, respect and mutual understanding. Our thoughts are with the Iranian nation as they strive for peace and progress," said local Muzammil Hussain.

Footage shows demonstrators singing, dancing and beating themselves across the chest during the march, as some held pictures of the victims of Raisi. School boys and girls were also seen participating in the rally.

Religious scholar Syed Aknoon paid homage to the Iranian leaders who perished in the crash, saying "They actually sacrificed their lives in the path of the Almighty and for our supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei."

Another resident, Idrees Ahmad, said that supporters of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will 'spill our last drop of blood' to show that 'he is not alone' during these times.

Raisi along with seven other Iranian leaders were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, according to state media and Iranian officials on Monday. No official cause has been reported at the time of publication.

Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences were offered by the leaders of Russia, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other countries. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
